Organization

There are so many wonderful blogs out there...all with patterns, recipes and fantastic ideas that I don't want to forget, so I try and organize and bookmark those pages for future reference.  Sounds like a good plan, doesn't it?  Unfortunately, my blog list and bookmarks have grown to be such a jumbled up mess that I can't find anything!  Last week I saw a roll recipe on one of the blogs that I read regularly and bookmarked it (because they looked like amazing rolls) but do you think I could find the recipe when I wanted it?  No!  I finally did find it, but not without a huge headache and a lot of wasted time.  Obviously, I need a better way to keep my blog list and bookmarks organized.  Tell me...how do you keep the ideas that you find online organized?

Oh, if you want to know more about the Pani Popo recipe that was the cause of my aggravation, it can be found at Applique Todayhttp://appliquetoday.blogspot.com/2011/01/tasty-tuesday_18.html

I have a daugher who is a software engineer - she solved this problem for me a few months ago and it it wonderful! If you go to reader.google.com, you can set up a feed, adding subscriptions to all your favorite blogs. Then you can go there to see all the new posts at one time. And you can "star" the posts you might want to go back to.

I use Evernote - the free version. It allows you to clip a photo or text and attach the URL of where you saw it. You can organize things into folders. It syncs to your computer so you don't have to be online to access your material and it also syncs to your phone. You can even take photos with your phone within Evernote and save them or voice memos, etc.

The other thing I do is to just star things within Google Reader. That way if I want to go back to them, I just click on "starred items", but that doesn't work for blogs that you don't get in your Reader.

Hi Susan! Just found your blog and I've had the same thing happen to me. So, now I cut and paste recipes into a letter to myself than file it in my mail under 'Recipes'. I have like 600 bloggers in my list and they are in either Google Reader or my follower gadget and on my blog I offer something like 4000 free pattern links. I am a major link collector...after a while I turned those into lists, and shared them all with others. It all is a problem but I found my ways inventing organizational techniques to cope with my desire to save everything online that I loved!

Susan, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue! I don't have anything to share, but am excited to read the comments and suggestions left by your readers!

I use the star feature on Google Reader too or save the post to my computer or iPad when I'm reading it.

I'm loving the Flipboard app on the iPad for reading blogs too I do a lot of skimming and its easy to flip through a lot of posts in a short time.

That does sound like a delicious recipe. Glad that you found it again. I am the same way.

I think it is a problem for all of us. I bookmark by: recipe, quilt pattern, blog etc. It still gets messy but at least I am not search through tons of links. I like the sound of that Evernote- free version.

I use Google Reader to keep a list of blogs that I follow regularly.

(I used Bloglines, but switched when they announced their pending shutdown - turned out they stayed around but I had already converted).

I have the same problem. I make different folders in my favorites. They are getting pretty full. I've learned with recipes to print them out right away or I forget about them.

I'm not a Google Reader fan because I don't get over there to read....I'm too busy and I read those blogs that come throught my dashboard faithfully.

I have the same problem. I've saved links and later went to find that the person had taken them down. They now sell their work and have decided to take free tutorial down. If I had copied and pasted it it would have worked.

I need a system that will work even when they take stuff down. And I'd prefer it be stored on my computer just in case the e-mail provided just so happens to loose my stuff...yikes.

I have folders that I save to in favourites or my documents like recipes, tutorials etc. The tutorial list is getting a bit unmanageable so I think I have to catergorise now. I back everything up on an external hard drive because I'd hate to lose them all.

I categorize my favorite blogs in files such as cross stitch, food, and general blogs. You are filed under favorite quilt blogs!
