ReplyDeleteThe oldest hot pad in my kitchen is one of those oven mitts in the shape of a pig. My mother gave it to me 24 years ago as a gag gift. I was in Virginia in college for pre-veterinary classes and had to go through a round of dealing with pigs. They scared me to death and every year after that my mom would give me something with pigs on it.

The oldest pot holder in my kitchen actually hangs on my wall. It's at least 55-60 years old!!! It was my grandmothers and it's adorable! A little orange owl that I swear is too thin to actually hold anything warm, let alone hot! So now he hangs in my sunny yellow kitchen to remind me of my dear departed grandma!

ReplyDeleteI don't know if they are the oldest per se, but I have some that my great grandmother crocheted while she was in the nursing home. My mother gave them to us shortly after we got married (6 years ago yesterday!). G didn't think they were that great until I told him that she crocheted them BLIND. I'd say that's impressive.

Oh God I just realize my oldest pot holder is from when I was a teen. We hardly use it because is so small but is still on the drawer with the others.

ReplyDeleteI have a pot holder that hasn't spent very much time in my kitchen, but that I nicked from my mother's goodwill bag last month. It was in my childhood kitchen for as long as I can remember (it could possibly even be older than I am), and even thought it's kind of ratty I really wanted it in my kitchen. :)

ReplyDeleteI have been married 12 years and I don't know if I have any pot holders from when I got married. I would say around 4 years ago when I started to redo my kitchen that I got new ones!
ReplyDeleteThe oldest potholder I have in my house is a crocheted one that looks like a flower. I got it from my Grandfather's belongings when he passed away over 30 years ago. I never knew my grandmother (she died before I was born) and I am not sure if she made it or not. I like to think she did and I treasure it either way.

We dont have any really old ones... but we do have some crappy ones. I made some quick ones from some cotton yarn. They suffice, but they are definitely not beautiful or well-crafted... :)

I still have an old potholder that was my parent's when they got married. It then became the camping potholder and was eventually given to me. It still works, so I've never gotten rid of it!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, it is blue and white striped with snowflakes. It says Let it snow and was from a set someone got me for Christmas one year. I don't really like it but won't throw it away cuz it is useable lol. Sad isn't it?

ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful - I love purple and green :) I still have some I got in Portugal in 2001! I thought I was the only one to keep things forever!! Yup - pot holders, dish drying cloths and aprons from foreign holidays (gotta collect something as a souvenir, right!!?).

ReplyDeleteI still have a set of hot pads that I remember my mom using when I was a little kid (I'm 44). They are stained beyond recognition, burnt in places, have holes where stuffing comes out, and have a greasy film on them that no amount of washing can get rid of. They still reside in my kitchen drawer...I don't have the heart to get rid of them, but they are unusable. I've been married 10 years so I have a few favorites that have been with me that long. One set in particular is nice and thick, but the binding is ragged on the edges.

Our oldest pot holder was made by my greatgrandmother many, many years ago. We don't use it any more. It's a round pot holder and we all prefer using oven mitts instead. Thanks for the giveaway!

I too have a potholder from when I got married almost 30 yrs ago. not homemade though. I am in the process of switching to homemade.

my oldest is a handle cover hot pad that looks like an opossum. My grandmother got it at a garage sale when my mom was little so it is as least 40 years old.

ReplyDeleteLet's see ~ my oldest potholder? I'm embarrassed to say that I have four potholders/hot pads. All of them were from my Mom's kitchen after she died and Dad was moving from the house I grew up in. When did she get them? I'm pretty sure they were bought when they bought that house back in 1961. LOL They are SO thin and washing them doesn't even clean them anymore. They are just SO gross. I did however, replace the hot pads. LOL I keep saying I really need to make new potholders/hot pads but until I finally decide exactly how I want to remodel my kitchen I'm not going to do it. The color schemes I'm considering are completely different.

I think one of mine is atleast 20+ years old. My husband and I are coming up on our 16th anniversary and I know I had them before I ever met him. ReplyDeleteIt's not actually in my kitchen at the moment, but my oldest potholder is an adorable Santa Bear potholder from about 1985. It's not in too bad of shape for its age since it spends most of the year in the Xmas decorations box.
