Last January I took a day for myself and attended a free motion quilting workshop taught by Karen Miller of Redbird Quilt Co. What a wonderfully fun day it was, and not just because it was my first day out since Thanksgiving! Karen is an absolutely delightful lady and a marvelous teacher! Who knows, I may actually quilt a quilt with more than my signature meander one day!Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15688785042826378058noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541488844616624304.post-12567614581995717952018-06-03T17:36:00.001-04:002018-06-03T17:36:03.542-04:00Silent Sunday

This was a fun quilt to make...it was full of “design opportunities”! My original plan was to quilt a New York City skyline etch-a-sketch style, which worked well, but when I finished the quilt it was pretty bland and needed something more. I really didn’t want to remake the whole piece so I made another larger quilt and mounted the smaller quilt on it bulletin board style with four tiny black buttons. I loved how it turned out so much that I entered it in a local juried art quilt exhibit. It was accepted and hung at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center in October 2017. It now hangs in my granddaughter’s bedroom.Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15688785042826378058noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541488844616624304.post-53633314534209745932018-05-27T07:00:00.000-04:002018-05-27T07:00:11.046-04:00Silent Sunday

There was a little quilting here and there over the last year. I made this little wall hanging last June for my granddaughter after she decided to decorate her new bedroom in black, white, and red.Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15688785042826378058noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541488844616624304.post-56140364084878973542018-05-22T17:27:00.000-04:002018-05-22T17:27:06.613-04:00A Lot Can Happen In A Year

Obviously, some things that weren’t happening here in the last year or so were quilting and blogging. I just didn’t have the time for either while I was working and honestly, I think I may have been suffering from a little quilter’s burnout too. My new job and some different hobbies took the place of quilting and knitting for awhile. Then things changed again in December. I had to quit my job in order to take care of my in-laws. My father-in-law was hospitalized for two weeks with heart and lung issues. While he was in the hospital it became evident that he wasn’t going to be able to go home alone, so my husband and I made the decision that we would try and keep him at home as long as we could. At the same time my mother-in-law entered into hospice care at the nursing home and in January she lost her 14+ year battle with Alzheimer’s. It has been a year full of changes but we are all adjusting to our new routines. One of the benefits of caring for my father-in-law is that I have found quilting again! A big part of my free time this winter was spent cutting scraps and stitching tops so it’s time to start documenting some finishes!

When the too short troll backing turned into a quilt top, I got the idea that I could make quicker strippie quilts for Lap Robes for Veterans! This organization actually prefers simple quilts over more intricate designs for a couple of different reasons, so these quilts will be perfect for them and I'll be able to use up the odds and ends of patriotic fabrics in my stash too! It's a win all the way around!Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15688785042826378058noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541488844616624304.post-21845211770300678132016-10-09T07:00:00.000-04:002016-10-09T10:42:40.856-04:00Silent Sunday

My original plan was for this to be the backing for the Quick Strippie Troll quilt top that I made last week, but it turned out to be just a few inches too short. Yes, I could add another white stripe somewhere to lengthen it, but I think I like it well enough as it is to use it as a top. Perhaps I will simply back them both with solid white and then I will have two Troll quilts to donate instead of one!Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15688785042826378058noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541488844616624304.post-2777545804256818642016-10-02T07:00:00.000-04:002016-10-02T07:00:30.877-04:00Silent Sunday

Now that fall is here and it's getting dark earlier, I'm finding that I have a little more time to spend in the sewing room again. I don't want to do anything too complex when I get home from work, but a few minutes of mindless sewing, while dinner is in the oven, is just what I need! Quick Strippie quilts are just the ticket for mindless sewing. It doesn't take long at all to stitch one together and they make great donation quilts!Susanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15688785042826378058noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5541488844616624304.post-33796500205696578952016-09-25T07:00:00.000-04:002016-09-25T07:00:40.945-04:00Silent Sunday

Oh my goodness! Was my last post really in July? What happened in August? I'd like to say that I was too busy preparing for the Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild's 2016 Exhibit to post but that wouldn't be quite true. Yes, I did play a part in this year's exhibit, but it was quite small compared to past years. Truth is, the only stitching I have done in the last 6 weeks was this small quilt that is part of the guild's "Dreaming of a World Without Cancer" display. All of the quilts in this display are offered for sale at the price of $25.00 each with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The guild's exhibit runs through September 25th, so if you are in the Wellsboro, PA area this week stop at the Gmeiner Art & Cultural Center to see it in person. For those who live out of town, photos of the exhibit can be seen on the guild's Facebook page.
Now that summer is coming to an end and the days are getting shorter, I hope to have more time for stitching and blogging!
My job at the thrift store definitely has benefits! Look at this beautiful hand-pieced, hand-quilted quilt that came in on the truck this week. Only one problem...it looks like it had a run-in with a pair of scissors at some point in its life. I couldn't bear to see it sold as a cutter quilt, so I brought it home to try my hand at restoring it. I know it's going to be next to impossible to match the fabrics, so the question is...shall I try to find a fabric that matches closest to the color and not worry about whether it is a print or solid or should I try to keep solids and prints as they are even if the shade is a little different?
