Selvage Snippet Basket Tutorial

Diane Bachman owner of Liberty Weaver Designs left a comment on my Selvage Snippet Basket Tutorial this evening requesting that I remove the tutorial because it is her copyrighted "Catch-All" pattern. Ms. Bachman's email is set as "no reply" and a Google search of Liberty Weaver Designs and "Catch-All" brought back no results, so I have no way to contact Ms. Bachman or verify that this is indeed her copyrighted pattern. Even though I cannot prove one way or another the validity of the copyright to this pattern I am going to remove the tutorial from my blog to avoid further problems. It certainly was not my intent to violate copyrighted material.

So cute Susan! I'll have to try one. I recognize several of my selvages in this one - including the green Swedish frog fabric! Glad to see you're putting them to good use!

This is beyond cute, and your tutorial is great.
I agree with SandyQuilts -- you definitely have to send a photo and a link to Karen Griska at SelvageBlog.

That is the cutest snippet basket I've seen. I wondered just WHY I was keeping all those selvage strips! And yes, I have been over to selvageblog.

Susan, can't believe I missed this post of your. I did a special thank you to you on my blog. I love my snippet basket and am using it for all those annoying clippings when you square up a block. Thank you so very much. So very kind of you.

What you are calling a Snippet Basket is in fact my COPYRIGHTED pattern "Catch-All". Please remove this from your site immediately.
Sincerely, Diane Bachman owner LibertyWeaver Designs

I am so sorry you recieved this comment. I think it is impossible to be truely original with patterns today because it all has been done before. Really everyone is just coming up with their own version of things. I am sure someone else made it before Dianne/LibertyWeaver too!!! I am even more sorry that you took it off before I made it although looking at it I may be able to work it out. Thanks again for the tutorial even though it was shortlived.

Sorry you had to take down the tutorial. I enjoyed making the Snippet Basket. It is a great project. I was able to find the original project and the owner's website:

http://libertyweaver.com/patterns.aspx

The pattern is among those in the quilting section.

Sorry to hear you had to take down your tutorial and I'm a librarian so I respect copyright. Your snippet basket reminded me a lot of a bourse, there is a tutorial here: http://focusonfinishing.wordpress.com/2007/05/18/bourse-class/
Lots of stitchers make these and I don't think they've been told to take down any tutorials they've shared. A bourse is a french term for a purse, it's a historic item, so people have been making them for years. Strange.

There is a lady who is making money by selling a pattern for the bourse in three sizes made with two cotton prints but I first saw one in a book years ago and then one was included as something to make with a napkin in one of Mary Mulari's books.

There is even a bag very much like the snippet basket in one of M'Liss Rae Hawley's new fat quarter book on purses. I guess it just goes to show there is nothing new under the sun but folks sure like to claim copyrights on designs that have be recycled over the years.

Sorry you had to delete it, I like it a lot. But I googled and found this
http://libertyweaver.com/patterns.aspx
I just think a simpel pattern like that can hardly be copy righted because 'playing' with fabrics to form a thread catcher several people could come up ith the same idea.

It is interesting to me that the request to remove your snippet basket tutorial photos and instructions came from someone who is currently posting an orange peel tablerunner that is nearly identical to one I submitted years ago to an on-line site (at least 9-10 years ago). It was not even new back then as it was a re-hashing of a traditional pattern that has been around for decades. Now I suppose anyone who suggests using a CD to make circles (rather than the coffee can lid I used back then) is breaking her copyright.

See this website: http://www.equilters.com/library/jeans/jeans_gallbaros.html

and also visit my blog for lots more links to my circle jeans quilt: http://sewartfullyminded.blogspot.com/2008/05/i-ran-across-this-info-i-submitted.html

I agree, it's a shame someone wants to claim copyright on this little basket when baskets made from squares have been around for some time. I like your basket and made my own version with some alterations. Thanks for posting it. My guess is one might be able to find this same basket type design elsewhere on the web under different names. I can understand why someone wants to protect their patterns. I know from experience it takes alot of work to write up instructions and go through the printing and marketing of them. It seems unusual that someone who is doing re-makes of traditional patterns that have been around for years would take issue about copyrights. Okay, getting off my soapbox.

I agree with you totally. It's a shame that someone can claim that she was the first to EVER make this design and deny others the chance to make such a lovely basket.
It's also a shame that she didn't submit proof of her copyright so that it could be verified. Please don't let her put you off, I think it may well be a case of 'sour grapes' as yours look so lovely!
I arrived at your tutorial a little too late so I shall muddle through and try to make one myself......assuming that doesn't breach her copyright!!!!
